
Health tourism (also called Medical travel or Medical tourism) is a term to describe to the rapidly-growing practice of traveling to another country to obtain health care.
Such services typically include elective procedures as well as complex specialized surgeries such as joint replacement (knee/hip), cardiac surgery, dental surgery, and cosmetic surgeries. Leisure aspects typically associated with travel and tourism may be included on such medical travel trips. Non-traditional medical practices like Yoga, Ayurveda and Spa/Aroma Therapy, etc. have also now become an integral part of the health tourism.
India is known in particular for heart surgery, hip resurfacing and other areas of advanced medicine. The government and private hospital groups are committed to the goal of making India a world leader in the industry. The industry's main appeal is low-cost treatment. Most estimates claim treatment costs in India start at around a tenth of the price of comparable treatment in America or Britain. India has good, modern medical infrastructure that, in some places, can be comparable to medical infrastructure in the West. The south Indian city of Chennai has been declared India's Health Capital, as it nets in 45% of health tourists from abroad and 30-40% of domestic health tourists.
Kerala, Uttranchal (Rishikesh) and some areas of Himachal Pradesh (Sulphur springs in Manali) are also becoming favourite Health tourism destinations for Special Ayurvedic, Yoga and Spa treatments.
